You're invited to submit a photo(s) that shows a moment from the pandemic that you've treasured — this could be:
› quality time with your child or pet
› strengthened bonds between siblings
› astonishing dedication by young digital learners
› a time of connection with friends/neighbors in new ways
› etc!
I plan to select from among the photo submissions I receive and then to make artwork commemorating these moments, which the submitter will have the *option* to buy (in a pay-what-you-can fee structure — you decide what is fair and feasible).
Then I plan to donate a portion of the proceeds to local organizations that continue to face extreme demand as they serve those hardest hit in our community by economic challenges of the pandemic. Through a similar fundraiser at the start of the pandemic, I donated more than $2500 to orgs like the Capital Area Food Bank, Greater DC Diaper Bank, Martha's Table, the Ward 6 Mutual Aid Network, and the Capitol Lounge employee relief fund.
Will the artwork be in a style like these? Can I request a specific size, medium turnaround date, etc?
As art within this project would not be commissions, I won't be able to honor custom requests for sizing, medium, turnaround time, etc., nor to guarantee a piece of art for every submitter. I *may* experiment with new media and styles within this project, so your artwork not be the same style as these samples.
How to Submit a Photo(s)
Email your photo(s) to me at ErinThompsonStudio@gmail.com and let me know you agree to the Artist's Rights and Source Material sections of my standard terms & conditions so I know you understand things like how I may use the resulting artwork, and you've confirmed the photo(s) you submit will be legal for me to use in these ways (for example: I can't reference a professional photographer's photo unless you get explicit permission from them to use it according to my terms/conditions).
Then, follow me on Instagram @ErinThompsonStudio if you wish to follow the project and potentially catch a glimpse of me working on art from your photo! (but following me is not required for me to select your photo!)
How to Purchase the Resulting Artwork
If I select your photo, I will email you a photo of the artwork I created, and then you can decide if you wish to purchase the original. If you do, you will select a price you think is fair/feasible, and I will provide Venmo, Zelle, Apple Pay details to make payment super-easy.
I will make the art available for pickup from my home near Lincoln Park (DC), or we can make arrangements for shipping if you are not local.
Qualities I'll Be Looking for When Selecting a Photo
My style works best if your photo captures a special moment between the subjects, where the subject(s) are engaged in something or interacting with each other, and the photo is shot from an angle (or even shot from behind can work really nicely). The examples above and below show the kinds of moments that can work really well. I look for interesting lines in the subjects' poses, and clarity of those lines/poses as I work to convey subject matter.
I am unlikely to select a formal (or even informal) camera-facing portrait where subjects are smiling at the camera, as those shots typically don't communicate a meaningful interaction/connection/personality in the way that more candid shots can.
